I Have Returned!!!

Originally posted October 11, 2011

So it's only been about 2 years, 4 months since I posted on this baby, and since I was devoting almost all the posts back then to UFC stuff, I figure why not get back into the swing of things with that very same subject (that's what about 92.4% of my waking thoughts revolve around anyway).

In the picture above, you can see UFC lightweight Champ Frankie Edgar walking away victorious from barely conscious rival (and epic D-Bag) Gray Maynard. This was the conclusion to a mostly epic trilogy which included a win for each man, and a draw.

What the picture doesn't convey is exactly how much of a BA Mr. Edgar is. If only the UFC PR machine could stop massaging Jon Jones' nether region with baby oil long enough to market this Lion Hearted mini-monster properly.

Where was I? Oh yeah, so Edgar and Maynard threw down back in January of this year (their first bout was a fairly boring affair in which Maynard took Edgar down and held him there for three consecutive rounds a few years back. Let's ignore that.). In an epic of mythic proportions, Maynard put a savage beating on Frankie in the first round, nearly putting him to sleep and prompting many keyboard warrior's to whine and moan about how the fight should have been stopped. It wasn't and Edgar (who I will now refer to as Lincoln Hawk, unless I forget, in which case I will refer to him as Frankie, Edgar, or Frankie Edgar) went on to mount a big comeback, winning a few rounds and the fight was judged a draw, which I agreed with.

This final battle started out in almost the same fashion, with Lincoln again taking a beatdown from Maynard (who I will now refer to as Biff Tannen, even though he's not nearly awesome enough to be referenced as a character from the greatest time-travel movie of all time) in the first round, only to recover and start winning rounds. This time around Lincoln Hawk managed to finish off an iron jawed Biff in exhilarating fashion, knocking his fool ass out in the fourth round and, in the process, wresting the title of "god of mma title fight comebacks" out of Matt Hughes cold dead fingers. OK, Matt's not dead but his career might as well be. Zing!

Anyway, I was a big fan of Edgar/Lincoln/My Dream Man (not in a gay way) since before he beat BJ Effing Penn TWICE, and absorbed a near comical amount of punishment from Gray/Biff TWICE only to recover and stage big comebacks. At this point I'm pretty sure if he started a cult, I'd be driving to Jersey tonight to sign up. I can only hope my first act as a member of his congregation would be to hunt down and slit the throats of Snooki, the Situation and all of the other jizzrags on Jersey Shore (which I've never seen, but won't stop hating), because I have to believe he thinks they are an embarrassment to New Jersey. I HAVE TO.

Back to reality (briefly), I find myself highly annoyed, but unsurprised, that this incredible performance was not reported on Sportscenter or any of the ESPN sports-writer's-talking-over-each-other shows. Likely because (I kid you not) Baseball playoffs are going on. Yeah, Baseball. WHO CARES??!! I know like 3 people who like Baseball and one of them is my Dad and another is my brother. I hate the world I live in!!!! A world where something as boring as Baseball gets hours of coverage, but Lincoln Hawks performance on Saturday is ignored! This is a fucking catastrophe! I hate you Micheal Wilbon!

Becky Hammon Is Hot...

Well you can probably tell from the photo above, she is a professional basketball player. Now I'm not a big fan of the WNBA, but I don't have a big problem with it either. I actually watch games from time to time if Hammon or the Seattle Storm, with cuties Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson are involved. I watch mostly because the chicks are easy on the eyes, but I won't deny most of them can really play. Obviously the level of talent and athleticism is just a step up above that of a mediocre High School boys game, but the ladies know the game and play it the way it was designed to be played: As a team game. The amount of entertainment that can be derived from basketball sans alley-oops is open to debate, and I'm not going to use this post to give my two cents on that subject.
I'm actually going back to Becky Hammon as an individual here.
Hammon is a great female basketball player. Last season she averaged just shy of 19 pts. and 5 assists per game and finished second in league MVP voting. Yet, despite her impressive play, she was not invited to try-out for the USA Olympic team. Assuming she's not good enough to be on the team (which seems un-frickin'-likely), she apparently wasn't even good enough to be one of the 23 invitees for try-outs. Was there some kind of conspiracy? Do the coaches of the Olympic team have a beef with Hammon? I have no clue. I don't keep up with the sport nearly well enough to know, but something about it certainly seems fishy. Either way, once it was clear she wouldn't be making the team, she started to seek alternative ways to Beijing.
Now it's important to understand that for female basketball players growing up pre-1997 (before the WNBA came about), the Olympic games were the ultimate goal. Playing professionally was only an option if you wanted to do it overseas (which Hammon and many other players still do in the WNBA's offseason). But you could still play for the Red, White, and Blue. With Hammon's dreams of doing so dashed, she applied for dual citizenship in Russia, where she plays in the offseason. As a dual citizen, she can play for the Russian national team. And she plans to. Much to the chagrin of many a flag-waver. I really don't see the problem here. Would people care if she was playing for Canada, or Italy? It not 1982, people. The commie issue is no longer an issue at all (in Russia, anyway). She was rejected by the US team, but she still has a chance to live her dream of playing in the Olympic games. I say go for it. If it ends up Russia/USA in the gold medal game (which many think it could), it will make for plenty of drama, maybe even enough to have me watching it.

EliteXC Debuts On CBS

Well, it was certainly no UFC. Here's a few thoughts on the first MMA broadcast on network television.

*It took over 45 minutes (!) to get to the second fight, and the first one only lasted a minute. I'm glad I didn't watch it live.

*Gina Carano is HOT (sorry Kristen Bell, but I've got a new celebrity crush), and she was actually impressive as a fighter. The chicks had the second best fight of the night, no doubt.

*Scott Smith's resilience was impressive. I thought he may not come out for round 2. I expect him to get tooled in the rematch, though.

*Kimbo Slice... Wow, where to start? I actually used to be a bit of a Kimbo Hater, but he seems pretty down to earth in his interviews and you can't really blame him for the way EliteXC is trying to push him as a legit MMA star. As for his fight, it was not a good showing for him. He clearly has power (Thompson looked like Cabbage, he wouldn't go down!), but the fight could've been stopped late in the second round when Kimbo was getting pummeled. Also, the stoppage was total BS. More than likely, Kimbo would've finished the fight on his own in the next few seconds, but Thompson didn't need rescuing yet. But I gotta give it to Kimbo, as he wheezed through is post-fight interview (I think he was having an asthma attack), he reminded everyone he is still learning and showed some class.

Wildcats Smell Blood In SEC East

6 weeks ago, the Kentucky Wildcats looked like a team that would be lucky to make the NIT this season. But now, with 2 weeks left in the regular season, they are in position to win the SEC East's regular season title. All they have to do is beat the #1 team in the nation in Knoxville, and THEN win their final two games. No easy task, but it's hard not to be optimistic, considering the way they have performed in conference games (with the exception of the game at Vanderbilt). A win at Tennessee may be asking for too much, however, considering the Vols are coming of an upset loss to Vandy earlier this week. Tennessee will undoubtedly come out of the gates firing on all cylinders, and UK probably doesn't have the weapons to keep up on the road. Even if they do lose on Saturday, they must maintain focus during the last two games against South Carolina and Florida (at Rupp), in order to get an at-large NCAA tourney bid. They can afford to lose to Tennessee, sure, but they desperately need those last two games and a win or two in the SEC tourney to make up for their non-conference record.
GO CATS!

The fight of the century has come and gone, and in my opinion, it did not disappoint. Chuck Liddell looked like his old self in defeating Wanderlei Silva in a match that MMA fans have been salivating over for years. While the first round was mostly a "feeling out" period, both fighters were able to get some good shots in. The second and third rounds featured a number of Liddell flurries, but he was unable to land a knockout blow. I would've preferred if Lidell had tried harder to finish Silva late in the third, but he was content to coast to the decision win. It's hard to judge him too harshly for that, however, knowing that his primary goal is regaining his light heavyweight title, and there was no need to risk getting knocked out himself by the heavy handed Silva late in the fight. A thoroughly entertaining slugfest.

In the "main event" of the UFC 79:Nemesis event, Matt Hughes was thoroughly dominated by George St. Pierre. GSP made Hughes (the most dominant Welter weight in UFC history) look like a virtual amatuer for about 8 minutes before forcing him to tap in the second round.
